Why Chicken Shop Date and Hot Ones are a match made in heaven.
Interviews are much more than a Q&A. Oftentimes, they’re conversations over chicken.
Amelia Dimoldenberg is a British comedian and journalist, who interviews many celebrities on her YouTube show called Chicken Shop Date. She brings a witty and awkward approach to her questions, while simultaneously reminding the interviewee they’re on a date with her.
In 2023, it’s not a strange thing to be interviewed with chicken being involved, as Sean Evans is also an interviewer, and runs his YouTube show named Hot Ones. If you are interested in pop culture and celebrity interviews, it’s likely you’ve seen a clip of his show.
I believe these two have created the collaboration of the year: Chicken Shop Date and Hot Ones. Sean Evans is always known to ask well-researched questions no matter who he interviews, and encourages a safe space for them with spicy chicken wings. With Dimoldenberg, he was no different.
“After I make them laugh once, I think they become more warmed and relaxed,” says Dimoldenberg, describing her way to analyze her “dates” moods and how to navigate the date to make it comfortable yet entertaining.
The most comforting thing about Dimoldenberg is her ability to remain authentic and genuine no matter the setting. It’s obvious she does her research about each and every person she interviews, and uses that to her advantage on places like red carpets, where you don’t know who you’ll see nor who you’ll get a chance to speak with.
One thing I specifically admire about Dimoldenberg is the range of guests she takes on dates. “It was never about getting A-list celebrities on the show,” she said, “It’s about choosing guests who I really respect. Their music, what they stand for, and people I think other people should know about.”
Similarly, Evans is seemingly comfortable with every guest he has on his Hot Ones show. The idea of his show is to eat progressively spicier chicken wings while he asks his hyper-detailed questions. His comfort and confidence can come from him having the upper hand in these interviews or maybe just his tolerance for spice. When he ‘went on a date’ with Dimoldenberg, his demeanor remained the same: charismatic, calm, and collected. The ideal date if you ask me.
Dimoldenberg’s interview style is quite distinct, starting out her interview with more “obvious” questions like “What’s it like to be bald in the Windy City of Chicago?” I found that question to be something I didn’t even know I wanted to know. What is it like to be bald in the windy city?
It seems almost impossible to be awkward with Evans, especially in Dimoldenberg’s presence. The two have a natural chemistry that keep the viewer easily entertained.
This collaboration was a long time coming, and the two interview styles inspire me to ask the well researched questions but also tap into my awkwardly flirty side going forward and see where it takes me.
I hope we get more content from these two, but for now I will continue to eat chicken and religiously watch every upload of theirs.
