Why You Should Know Something About DoSomething.org

Why you should know about DoSomething.

DoSomething is one of the largest nonprofits in the country, and for good reason; it’s all about calling to action in local communities. The nonprofit is exclusively targeted towards young people (ages 15-25) creating social change in a creative way. “Together, DoSomething members participate in our campaigns and programs to take action on causes that impact them and their communities,” according to their website.

It’s for young people.

Everything we do now affects the younger generation, and it’s important to be aware of the power they already have. Younger people have their entire future ahead of them, and introducing the opportunities to help in their communities and advocate for social change could literally save the world. Don’t underestimate younger people’s potential, I think that DoSomething’s commitment to the younger generation is admirable.Don’t worry about sounding professional. Sound like you. There are over 1.5 billion websites out there, but your story is what’s going to separate this one from the rest. If you read the words back and don’t hear your own voice in your head, that’s a good sign you still have more work to do.

Scholarships.

One of the biggest stressors about pursuing higher education is the cost. DoSomething has always provided endless scholarships as a reward for the hard work students serve in their community. How it works: students sign up for a campaign, complete the campaign, and upload a photo of how it was used. The campaigns can look like reading a banned book for Hispanic heritage month or creating a road safety guide to encourage awareness and safe driving. They even have text message notifications to alert about the new scholarship opportunities or petitions that can be signed.

Awareness and action.

During the summer of 2020 after George Floyd was unjustly killed by police officers in Minneapolis, and DoSomething sent out informational emails about what happened and how people can get involved to fight racial injustice. They provided self-care guides for those affected, and educational guides for those who needed more information. They educate young people, and give them a microphone for their voice to be heard. DoSomething gets younger people to do something.

Besides racial injustice, education, mental health and more, encouraging young people to register to vote is one of their biggest goals. They saw a record breaking number of Gen-Z voters in the 2020 presidential election. Resources such as “How to prepare for the Election Season,” and “7 Questions About Voter Registration You Were Too Afraid to Ask” are provided as a non-intimidating way to learn about voter registration.

DoSomething is changing the world, and it needs to be talked about. Young people are blessed to have an organization exclusively for their benefit, and I am all about it. Lack of resources is no longer an excuse, there are so many at our fingertips, so it’s up to us to decide whether we want to do something and take action.
